On October 23, at 7:00 PM, the canteen tutoring volunteer service activity of Boya Service Team of the College of Chemistry was launched at the student canteen. The activity aimed to help canteen employees' children solve their problems in study and improve their academic performance.
After the children arrived at the canteen, Zhu Zicong, leader of the volunteer team, assigned each child’s study to the corresponding volunteer and maintained discipline. The children were quite cooperative. Xiao Xin (pseudonym) offered her completed homework actively to ask Captain Zhu Zicong to help her check the mistakes. After checking, Zhu Zicong found that Xiao Xin had difficulty in the calculation of division, and the wrong steps led to the result of her errors. Consequently, he took out the scratch paper, writing down the correct calculation steps for Xiao Xin, which helped Xiao Xin realize her mistake. After that, Zhu Zicong circled the other questions with the same mistake and guided Xiao Xin to correct them as an exercise. Finally, with the help of Zhu Zicong, Xiao Xin successfully mastered the calculation method of division.
At the same time, in order to improve Xiao Bei's (pseudonym) English ability, volunteer Xiao Xuefei tried communicating with Xiao Bei in English and pointed out his pronunciation problems in time. However, she found that Xiao Bei was not so keen on English study and frequently distracted. In that condition, Xiao Xuefei asked Xiao Bei patiently about his feelings and difficulties in learning English. After thinking about it, Xiao Bei said that he did not like taking English courses and often could not remember the pronunciation and spelling of words. After the child explained his problems, Xiao Xuefei did not teach him the knowledge directly, but encouraged him first: English learning is not so charging, and as long as we find the proper approach, we all can learn English well. Then, she taught Xiao Bei phonetic symbols, the most basic knowledge of the alphabet, while introducing the Chinese Pinyin as a comparison to clarify the pronunciation and spelling skills detailly. After several times of practice and correction, Xiao Xuefei obviously witnessed the progress of Xiao Bei. Additionally, Xiao Bei's interest in English also improved a lot.
After the activity, the children expressed their gratitude to the volunteers and then their parents led them home. Xiao Bei said to his mother, "The English knowledge the teacher taught today is very interesting. I will never worry about remembering English words in the future." Zhu Zicong, leader of Boya Service Group, said, "In the tutoring process, we passed on the knowledge and learning experience to the children, which not only makes them gain and make progress, but also is a kind of growth for us. So far, Boya Service Group of the College of Chemistry has finished the canteen tutoring volunteer service activity and made it a great success.
