Recently, many students have reflected online that some trash cans in the campus had disappeared and the number of them had decreased, which caused great inconvenience and trouble to the students. The reporter carried on the related investigation on this phenomenon, and got a positive response from the Property Service Center.
According to this clue, the reporter investigated the distribution of garbage cans in each main section of the campus. First of all, she investigated the main road section of the campus and found that there was no garbage can on Guizhong Road which is often used for holding major activities. Many students also revealed that it was very inconvenient to dispose of garbage when they took part in activities such as the Competition of One Hundred Clubs(百团大战). In addition to the main street in the school, the quantity of garbage cans on the road from the west school gate to the south school gate was not sufficient, with the distance between each two garbage cans being almost 100 meters.

According to incomplete statistics, in the eastern area of the school, the number of garbage cans near Xuezi Canteen and Dongyi Canteen was also small, and the garbage cans in this area needed to be found in the direction of Despair Slope. Many students would take food out of the canteen to save time on the road, but the waste packaging bags could not be thrown away in time. So the students often had to take the waste and find garbage cans on the road.
In addition, the reporter found that the lack of garbage cans in Youming Stadium was also a problem. Numerous people would choose to exercise here throughout the day, especially in the evening. In addition to the students of our school, many residents who live nearby would also take a walk here. According to statistics, there were only 4 or 5 garbage cans in the whole stadium and most of them were more than 100 meters apart from each other. The shortage of garbage cans not only brought trouble to students, but also inconvenience to nearby residents.

So are the garbage cans scarce all the time, or have they suddenly decreased recently? In an interview, Ding, a student at the 2018 grade of the School of Journalism and Communication, said that the garbage cans on campus were adequate before, but because of the construction of the campus in August this year, the number of them had reduced greatly.
Wang, an environmental sanitation worker, said that due to the reduction of garbage cans, his workload also increased. "I used to clean the garbage can only once a day in the morning. These days, there are much more garbage than before. So I have to do it twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening." The reduction of garbage cans is a crucial problem for all the sanitation workers. Wang also mentioned that owing to the recent property handover, the cleaning work in recent days was forced to be interrupted, and the accumulated garbage in recent days increased the heavy workload. It is reported that the property handover is carried out regularly in our school, and there was a lack of garbage cans this time, which led to the increased workload of sanitation workers.
The reporter found that according to the national standard "Standards for the Setting of Urban Environmental Sanitation Facilities", the setting interval of waste containers is 25-50m for commercial streets and 50-80m for main roads. Obviously, the number of waste containers in our school is not enough. In the east courtyard of Mafangshan campus of Wuhan University of Technology which is adjacent to CCNU, the number of garbage cans in this university is significantly more than ours. Generally, one garbage can be found every 30 meters. In some places, there are large recycling stations. The garbage collection system is relatively perfect compared with ours. Obviously, the accessible trash can plays an important role in the campus neatness. Overall, the existence of the trash can is not to destroy the landscape, but to protect the neatness and beauty of environment.

What are the reasons for the lack of garbage cans in our school? To answer this question, the reporter came to the relevant departments for inquiry. Mr. Zhang, from the Property Service Center of the Logistics Support Department, told reporters that due to the rainwater and sewage diversion project in recent months, some sections needed to be constructed, so many garbage cans had to be temporarily removed. "After the completion of the project, the number of garbage cans will increase, so students don't need to worry." Zhang promised. After the completion of the project, the Guizi Mount will not only be more "orderly", but also more clean and beautiful.
