Recently, homeless animals on campus have aroused heated discussion. Raphael, a white cat in east district which is regarded as an “Internet celebrity”, has become the focus.
Accident·Rescue on campus shows “Love in CCNU”
Witnesses said, at about 10 p.m. on 4th November, the white cat Raphael, usually seen in east district, was hit by a car and got injured on the slope in front of East 1st dining hall. It convulsed and spitted blood, lying in the middle of the road, unable to walk. Pedestrians paid high attention the instance the accident happened. Some kind people continuously attempted to get in touch with the school security, neighboring 24h emergency hospitals for pets, animal protection associations and so on. Ultimately, Raphael was sent to Hao Ban Animal Hospital nearby for first aid by Teacher Wang and other two students of our school.

When sent to hospital, the injured cat was in bad condition. The doctors took first-aid measures to stabilize its temperature, and made a treatment plan step by step based on the diagnosis of all parts of its body. At the same time, kind students who knew that on campus built up QQ groups spontaneously and updated in QQ zone to fund for the cat. Having sent the message out, we found that quickly the reposts reached over 200 that day in the early morning, with the money raised over 4000 yuan and the people engaged over 200. People in the QQ groups also instantly climbed to nearly 300, who kept an eye on the latest updates of the cat. Mr. Wang, together with three students and senior student Xun from Wuhan Animal Protection Association, set up “Rescue Team for Raphael. On the early morning of the next day, they still stayed at its side, sending messages on Raphael’s conditions at hospital back to the students at all times, as well as delivering the love from students to the cat in time.
At about 12:40 midnight the next day, in the QQ group came the news the first time, claiming the cat’s safety: Its temperature rose steadily and it was out of danger. In the following days, the doctor observed and checked its head, legs, heart and lung respectively by X-ray. At the moment, Raphael gradually becomes well. With slight cheekbone fractures, it is taking treatment which requires it to rest quietly and can relieve pain and inflammation. Now it is in good condition, able to eat normally and move slowly.

Roaming·The Cat Popular on the Internet in East District Is Cared by All in CCNU
Raphael is the name given by members of the rescue team to the white cat. Before that it was also called “Bai Bai”, “Brother Cat” and so on by the students living in the east district. They said that the white cat was seen many times to eat cat food and dried fish besides the dormitory buildings. It has a mild temper and thus is extremely enchanting. Usually lying on the grassland of the grove and sleeping under the sun, it attracted much attention from the passers-by, who took photos with the cat. Raphael, wandering among the dormitories in the east district, became a favorite in the east district. It could even receive food prepared by kind people frequently.

Students familiar with Raphael worried whether it was pregnancy that resulted in its bulging belly after knowing about the accident. Having noticed that, the members of the rescue team made an announcement saying that Raphael was a boy cat and its belly, filled with food, came from everyone’s love. Consequently, there was nothing to worry about. The humorous words relieved many of those loving cats pretty much.
Extending·Waiting for new home after roaming
Student Lu from “Rescue Team for Raphael” mentioned in the interview that he was engaged in the rescue for a homeless dog called Le Le on campus last year. Its legs were then badly injured. When organizing this campaign, they got experience from measures taken by the leader at that time. It is a relay in rescuing homeless animals on campus: Rescue is going on all the time, with “Love in CCNU” never changed.

Considering the quietness required for the recovery of Raphael and other cats, the doctor advises not to let too many people to visit them. Thus, Student Liao, from the rescue team, pays a visit to the cat every day and posts photos, videos and so on for others in the QQ group, setting their mind in peace. Afterwards, it comes into an everyday routine to share several photos and videos accompanied with words regarding the condition of the cat in the QQ group. Now it is in good condition, but unsuitable for roaming. The doctor also suggests a responsible adopter with the capability to raise animals be found following formal adoption procedures, making a warm home for Raphael.
It’s no doubt that Raphael and Le Le are lucky enough to be rescued. We are continuously thinking about how to assist homeless animals on campus properly and taking actions accordingly.
