Seeing so many friends of mine fall in love, I decide to make a brief introduction of English and French wedding to wish you would find your Mr./Miss Right in the coming year.
When it comes to the symbols of English wedding, the first thing pops into my mind is the beautiful calla lily. As bouquets, calla lilies not only signify a happy and wonderful marriage life, but also are a symbol of the bride’s purity and elegance. What differs English wedding from other ones is that the bride will throw her bouquet to the single men, and the man who catches the bouquet will be the next one to get married. And instead of calla lilies, daisy and rose garlands are the symbols of French wedding. When the flower girl offers the two different garlands to the bride, she can choose the daisy one to show her hesitation or the rose one to show her acceptance.
Some of those who have watched several American series would know about ”something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue”, which is also the dressing custom for French wedding. “Something old” is the vintage jewelry given by the elderly, which stands for the blessing from the bride’s family. “Something new” is usually a white dress signifying a wonderful marriage. “Something borrowed” is believed to bring good luck to the new couple, which is often an accessory borrowed from a happy couple. ”Something blue” symbolizes the loyalty and purity of the bride and groom, which can be a blue handkerchief or some other wedding accessories.
As for English wedding, there’s another popular custom. After the wedding ceremony, the new couple would leave the auditorium with a great many of scraps of paper flying in the air, which is called confetti. Confetti originates from throwing kernels. Dating back to the 15th century, a baker’s wife saw Henry VII and the Queen travelling in Bristol, then she threw kernels to them to show her blessing. As is known to all, kernels stand for harvest and prosperity. Then people replace kernels with colorful scraps of paper to make it a more convenient way to show the blessing.
Wedding is definitely the most beautiful dream girls are longing for. And I truly hope that everyone will find the person who loves you, understands you and cherishes you, and who cares about your dream and makes it come true. Finally, let’s appreciate a classical wedding vow--”To have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part.”
