Earth for All 众生的地球

April 22, 2023 Liu Yaqi

"Heaven and earth coexist with me, and all things are one with me." In this vast universe, the Earth is the common home of all living things. We share the earth with other living things, whether lions or ants, grass or humans. Many biological systems formed by these creatures are integrated and interrelated, maintaining the balance of life.

On April 22, 2023, the theme of World Earth Day was "Earth for All", the theme of China is "Cherishing the Earth, Harmonious Coexistence between Man and Nature"but according to a United Nations report, approximately 1 million species of flora and fauna are currently threatened with extinction. There are a wide variety of organisms on Earth, whether humans or other organisms, which are an indispensable part of the Earth's ecosystem. Protecting the 'Earth of all sentient beings and protecting biodiversity is not only our reverence for nature but also our commitment to the future.

Biodiversity is the foundation of human survival and development and a vivid manifestation of the harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. But people hunt prey and recklessly exploit resources, causing indelible damage to nature. In July 2019, a sudden wildfire destroyed over 6 million hectares of forest in Australia. The area where the wildfire passed was devastated, causing 3 billion animals to die and emitting 350 million tons of toxic gases such as carbon dioxide. It would take 100 years for the Earth to absorb all of this carbon dioxide. Mountain fires have destroyed the habitats of animals, accelerated soil erosion, and even accelerated the extinction of animals and plants. Natural disaster goes far beyond this. In 2020, the locust plague ravaged the East African region, with a large number of locusts that have not been seen for decades, and the presence of locusts is difficult to predict. The source of this disaster is highly likely caused by global warming. These are all known injuries, and there are more hidden in our lives that are subtly changing our lives.

Sometimes, heaven breeds things, but earth produces limited wealth. Behind humanity's demand for nature is the alarm sounded by nature. Throughout history, human diseases and disasters have always been inextricably linked to their actions. The Earth is our home, and it is also the home of other organisms and future generations. Whether it's mountain fires or locust infestations, they all tell us to learn to conform to nature, coexist harmoniously with all things in nature, and always maintain reverence for nature.
