On December 30th, the reading report of teacher Liu Zhen of the School of Information and Communication was held. Teachers and students talked freely about James Carey's classic book Communication as Culture.
Liu Guisong, graduate student of grade 2020, served as the speaker of the reading seminar. Liu Guisong analyzed the book and introduced the influence of Dewey and Chicago School's conception of communication constructing society and the theory of symbolic interaction, Ennis and McLuhan's media space-time bias and the relationship between technological culture and society as well as Clifford Geertz's theories of "deep description" and interpretable text on James Carey.
Then, other students exchanged their reading experience, analyzed from the perspectives of communication and culture as well as communication and technology, and discussed the application of Kerry's theory of the ritual view in the context of new media communication.
Teacher Liu Zhen approved of students' learning attitude and introduced the Chicago School with his own experience of scholarly exchange. He believed that in the age of media, the transmission of information could not be limited to the understanding of its "transmission". As a graduate student of School of Information and Communication, what was necessary was to think about the more important thing of communication rituals, how scholars put forward the innovative expression with metaphor, and how to make innovation in the personal research.
Just like the theme of the recent World Internet Conference "digital endowing us with power, creating the future together", the current communication can not only focus on the study of interpersonal communication, mass communication and so on, but also some important mutual communication between things as well as things and people, which can become great research topics and are worth learning.
