“My 2020” —— the final English speech competition which was launched by Communist Youth League Committee of School of Foreign Langues and taken over by its Student Union was held successfully in the No.3218 classroom in the afternoon of 23rd October. The judges who attended included Ke Xianbing (associate professor from English Department), Chen Zhihong (associate professor from Public Language Department), Yang Yuwan (tutor from Public Language Department) and Sun Yadi (teacher from English Department)
This campaign aimed to enhance our enthusiasm and initiative for English learning as well as the ability of logical thinking and expression. Furthermore, the candidates’ capacity of oral English would be improved. For the most significance, through the activity, it was able to consolidate their English learning and strengthen the communication between freshmen.
Having finished the preparation, the host Wang Yuexi announced its beginning, then presented the introduction of the regulations and process.
There would be 18 competitors willing to give their three minutes’ speeches, afterwards the judges would offer their scores. Eventually, the contestants were going to be ranked according to their marks. With warm applause, the candidates couldn’t wait to start to demonstrate their lectures. Their speeches contained wide diversity of contents, for instance, Zou Zhen from English Department described her 2020 as a journey of balancing and self-awareness——“I anticipate that everyone would be aware of both self-recognition and emotions. We ought to follow thinking and aspirations of ourselves rather than lingering without destination”. From their review of 2020, the competitors reveal their thoughts from touched events, introspection of the year as well as their love to our country.
After their brilliant lectures, comments were given by judges and audiences. Hua Tiantian, a student from English Department, said: “It seemed that each contestant has their own unique thinking towards this topic. Having listened their dramatically infectious share, the voice of 2020 is now echoing in my brain.”
Finally, ten candidates stood out from eighteen after the rank of their scores. Following that, they prepared for the next part: impromptu speeches, which lighted up the climax of the whole competition. The No.4 contestant from English Department named Peng Jiayi illustrated her idea of the topic “What make a good English teacher in your opinion”. She indicated that initially the pursuit of teachers should be stressed. Besides that, as teachers, they ought to possess fundamental teaching skills and finally enough enthusiasm as well as patience is expected to be offered to students. Though there were just 3 minutes for preparation, each competitor expressed their voices of sanity, which revealed great brilliance and exposed their extraordinary demeanor. The campaign came to the end with diverse lectures, then it came to the award ceremony. Eventually, ten students were rewarded in total.
This competition has provided a stage for students in order to show talents as well as improve themselves. Moreover, their passion for English and the learning atmosphere have been reinforced. Afterwards, one of the candidates Zhang Hanwen shared her view towards this activity: “It provided a platform to bring out my perspectives as well as strengthen my English skills. The year of 2020 is coming to its end but our college lives have just begun. I wish that everyone would continue to strive in this brand-new phrase carrying with this precious memories.”
